Opportunities

From time immemorial, a lot of non-American citizens have always had the American dream. They believe that America is a land of opportunities, a melting pot where they will go and make it big in life.

Most people even believe that the only thing holding them from succeeding in life is the fact that they do not live in the United States of America. It is incredible how this once struggling country has become a world power and a place where dreams are achieved. It has become such a world power so much so, that the rest of the world waits eagerly to make decisions, and people all over the globe follow immediately most of the decisions or policies that are made in the USA.

It is this American Dream we mentioned earlier that is the driving force behind a lot of people interested in moving to America. It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than to get an America visa. If you eventually get it, the joy in your heart will know no bounds. You have officially made it in life. If you do not get one, you will look for other ways to get into the land flowing with milk and honey and one of such techniques is to enter the country as an illegal immigrant through the Southern US-Mexican Border.

Mexico is the United States largest source of the illegal immigrant. Migrating to a country illegally is a violation of federal immigration laws, but what would you have people whose dreams are a border away do? Sit and wait for the border to be open? They will find a way even if it means them entering the country of their dreams illegally. I mean, it is a small price to pay for success, and you know what they say about success. It doesn’t come easy. If they have to cross the border illegally, then they have to. According to research, as of 2014, there were over 12.1 million immigrants in the United States, which is over a million increase from the statistics of 2010 which was a rough estimate of 11.6 million immigrants. In the 2014 statistics, 6.6 million were from Mexico, and the next was El Salvador, which has over 700,000 illegal immigrants.

The Mexico-United States border, according to Wikipedia, is an international border separating the United States from Mexico, and it is the most frequently crossed international boundary in the world. We will talk extensively about the residents of the border towns and the role illegal immigrants play as regards the border towns in the United States.

While many residents of the border town on the Mexican side have dreams as regards migrating, others are very comfortable where they live. This article is about how illegal migration affects people in the United States of America. The first question has to be why do people want to migrate to the United States? It is a place where a lot of people believe that their dreams will be achieved. When individuals from developing countries are frustrated with their government or the fact that things are not going well in their country economic -wise, they believe that the next thing is to migrate to a developing country. Most of them do not care about the route that is why we have a lot of African Migrants perish in the Mediterranean Sea and the desert because they are trying to find an illegal way to move to a better place.

Arizona is a state in the United States that shares a border with Mexico. The residents of the peaceful state will less glitz and glamour which shares a border with Mexico are lamenting as regards the high rate of drug and human trafficking in their land which is as a result of illegal migrants from the border. Before you ask me how, I would remind you that it is challenging for illegal immigrants to get jobs. So, they do anything they can lay their hand on one of which includes doing drugs. Most of them smuggle drugs into the United States, and it harms the lives of the children. Most of the kids in Arizona are influenced by the high rate of crime rate and drugs that these illegal immigrants bring to the country when they finally cross the border.

Legal United States citizens who prefer to live on the southern side of the border or immigrants who are in the United States legally and cross over frequently are stopped and searched. They are thoroughly examined because of the high rate of migration across the border. United States Citizens are asked to show their passports, and legal migrants are asked to present their documents. Also, they are forced to wear security suits as they have to prevent themselves from being harmed by border security. Their cars and car plate numbers are scrutinized to search for drugs and other dangerous substances which most of the illegal immigrants try to smuggle into the United States.

It is not different in California the home of entertainment in the United States as loads of immigrants from Mexico troop to California to get their share of the American dream. This affects California negatively as most companies thrive on cheap labor provided by the illegal immigrants who are willing to work for a meager sum of money. There is an increase in crime rate compared to the nineties when most immigrants were in California legally.

Another issue is the increased sense of economic burden on taxpayers. The influx of illegal immigrants to the United States affects the taxpayers because the responsibility of the poor immigrants is on the government. The government has to use the money that meant for something else to cater to the mostly poor immigrants.

It also increases spending on border security. Because a lot of people in Mexico are eager to cross the border illegally, the United States Government has to increase the amount spent on border security to prevent these illegal immigrants from coming into the country most of whom bring drugs along.

Tijuana, California in Mexico is a border town in Mexico that borders San Diego of the United States of America. The city is home to a lot of Mexicans who hold the American dream and home to some American citizens who cross the border to go to work. They live in Mexico and go to work in the United States as houses are relatively cheaper in Mexico. While Tijuana is a safe place, some illegal immigrants make the legal ones who are crossing the border to be searched like thieves because almost everyone is a suspect.

In the migrant’s camps in some border cities in Mexico, the living condition is not favorable at all. The place stinks and is overcrowded because there are a lot of people from other parts of the world who come to Mexico believing it is easier for them to go into America. Most of these people are very poor, and coming to the United States is going to be a burden on the Government of the United States of America.

The United States President Donald Trump has planned to build a wall to make sure illegal immigrants do not come into the country anymore. While many people criticize his decision, the high rise of crimes on the border town, the effect on the economy, and the reduction of the minimum wage for immigrants is a call for concern. The fact that immigrants take way less than an America will take for a job is making it more difficult for citizens and legal immigrants to get jobs because the owners of the company know that people are willing to do the job for a way less amount. The constant searching of American citizens who live in Mexico when they are about to cross the border is not a good thing. We cannot blame the border security which the government has equipped with facilities to make sure that no illegal immigrant crosses the border.

How can we fix the growing population of illegal immigrants in the United States? The significant way we can fix this ever-increasing population of illegal immigrants is to make life more comfortable in the country of the migrants. How is this possible? By creating policies that are friendly to the people. In most of the countries the migrants come from, they are blessed with natural resources, but they do not have good leaders to manage their resources. If their leaders can work together to make life easier for the growing populace, a lot of people won’t be bothered to leave their country. An African man who was so desperate to leave his country decided to go through the academic route. According to him, getting his undergraduate degree was a chore, but if the educational path is the only way to leave his country that stinks of corrupt leaders who are driving private jets and unemployment, he is willing to make that sacrifice. My point exactly? If the leaders are better, most people won’t think of leaving.

While we lament about building walls to make illegal immigrants stay away from our country, we should find a way to educate the masses from various country to vote in the right government who will have their welfare at heart and not someone who cares about money.
